Water Pump System

How to operate and troubleshoot the cottage water pump

  • Turn on main power switch in basement
  • Prime the pump if needed (check pressure gauge)
  • Normal pressure: 40-60 PSI
  • Check filter monthly during summer season
  • Winterize before first frost (see winterization guide)

Generator Operation

Starting and maintaining the backup generator

  • Check oil level before starting
  • Ensure fuel tank has adequate gas
  • Pull choke out, press start button
  • Let warm up 2-3 minutes before load
  • Run monthly for 15 minutes to keep it fresh

Seasonal dock installation and storage

  • Spring: Install after ice-out (late April/early May)
  • Use 4 anchor points with chains
  • Check wood for rot annually
  • Fall: Remove before freeze-up (mid-October)

  • Wood stove: Clean chimney annually
  • Electric heat: Keep at 50°F minimum in winter
  • Window units: Install late May, remove September
  • Propane heater: Check tank levels monthly
  • Never leave heating on unattended for extended periods

Proper septic care and maintenance

  • Tank pumped every 3-5 years (last: 2023)
  • NO: wipes, feminine products, grease, chemicals
  • Use septic-safe toilet paper only
  • Minimize water usage (shorter showers, full loads)
  • Signs of trouble: slow drains, odors, wet spots in yard

Winterization Checklist

Closing the cottage for winter

  • Turn off main water, drain all pipes
  • Pour RV antifreeze in all drains and toilets
  • Remove dock and store in shed
  • Cover outdoor furniture or store inside
  • Set heat to 45-50°F to prevent freezing
  • Clean fridge, prop doors open
  • Close shutters, lock all doors and windows
  • Turn off water heater and drain
